John Carlson completed his tenth year as Skutt Catholic varsity girls head coach, where the Omaha native has a record of 144-41. Under his leadership, the Skyhawks have qualified for ten straight state tournament appearances. His teams won the 2006 and 2009 Nebraska Class B state championships and finished as Class B runner-up in 2005 and 2008.
Carlson, who has a master's degree in education, coached at Nebraska Wesleyan College from 1999-2001. In 1999, he led Wesleyan to an undefeated season and was named the Nebraska Intercollegiate Coach of the Year. In 2000, Carlson led Wesleyan to its first ever NCAA Division III national tournament appearance. Carlson's overall record of 34-4-4 is the highest winning percentage in Nebraska Wesleyan men's soccer history. In 2001, Carlson took over the College of Saint Mary's soccer program. He guided the Flames to three consecutive postseason appearances and his 2001 team made it to the NAIA Elite Eight. He was named Region Four and Midland Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for his efforts. His career record at CSM was 45-13-7.
